What are the effects of disasters on children and youth?

Because of its location, the Philippines is prone to natural hazards, and it is increasingly experiencing the effects of environmental risks. It is also affected by human-induced disasters such as armed conflict. These disasters often cause loss of livelihoods and other resources, heightening the risks of abuse, exploitation and neglect of children and youth. It also disrupts basic health, education, and other social services.

How are children and youth excluded from disaster risk reduction and management?

Children, youth and families are not fully aware of how disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) lessens their exposure and vulnerability and improves their ability to deal with the effects of disasters. Their lack of involvement in the DRRM processes at the national and local levels also poses a challenge.

How is ChildFund helping children and youth become resilient during disasters and emergencies?

We train them in Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and give them a chance to take the lead in protecting themselves and their communities. We also work with local governments and other partners to support the active participation of children and youth in DRRM. We also specializes in Education in Emergency (EiE), particularly, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support interventions.
