What is SEL and why does a contextualized framework matter?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) helps students understand themselves, relate well with others, and make responsible choices. A contextualized SEL framework matters because it reflects Filipino values, culture, and everyday life, making learning more meaningful and relatable. Without this local context, SEL programs can feel disconnected and less effective. This framework ensures that SEL truly supports Filipino learners in ways that resonate with their real-world experiences.

What is the impact to school-age children?

SEL improves students’ academic performance, emotional well-being, and ability to build healthy relationships. It helps them become more resilient, empathetic, and responsible, skills that are essential both in and out of school. When children feel safe, valued, and understood, they are more engaged and confident in their learning. This leads to stronger communities and better futures.

How is ChildFund promoting Social Emotional Learning in Schools?

ChildFund Philippines, in partnership with SEAMEO INNOTECH and DepEd, developed a localized SEL framework called Exemplifying Social and Emotional Learning in Learner’s Environs and Teacher’s pedagogy (ExSELLEnT). It defines SEL competencies based on Filipino culture and supports teachers, school leaders, families, and communities in guiding students’ social and emotional growth. The framework also encourages positive parent-child and teacher-child relationships, as supportive home and learning environments foster SEL skills development. It serves as a practical guide for integrating SEL into everyday teaching and helps students become confident, compassionate, and capable individuals.
