Lyka’s Voice: A Young Advocate’s Fight for Equality

At 16, Lyka is like many other girls her age, full of dreams, energy, and excitement for the future. A Grade 11 student from Albay, she enjoys simple moments with friends, sharing meals, and making memories outside of school. She finds joy in music, often singing and dancing in her free time. But beyond her studies and hobbies, Lyka carries a strong sense of purpose, one that drives her to speak up for the rights of girls and women.

Lyka is an active participant in Project CLAP (Child-Led Advocacy Academy Project), a project funded by EDUCO Philippines and implemented by ChildFund Philippines. Through workshops and activities, she is learning how to build her confidence and use her voice to push for change. She has realized that standing up for equality is not just about speaking but also about understanding the challenges, connecting with others, and finding ways to make a difference.

“I joined Project CLAP because I want to learn how to use my voice to fight for girls and women’s rights,” Lyka shares with a determined smile. “I believe that we deserve the same respect and treatment as anyone else.”

For Lyka, education is not just about grades, though she eagerly anticipates her report card as a reflection of her dedication and perseverance. It is also about discovering how she can contribute to her community. Through Project CLAP, she is gaining confidence in public speaking, learning about the issues that affect girls and women, and finding ways to stand up for equality in her school and beyond.

She dreams of becoming a flight attendant someday, traveling the world and experiencing different cultures. But more than that, she envisions a world where men and women are treated equally, where no girl has to fight for the respect she rightfully deserves.

Lyka is already taking steps to turn this vision into reality. Whether it is speaking up in discussions, encouraging her peers to know their rights, or setting an example in her community, she is showing that change starts with young voices like hers.

“My hope is for all girls to have the confidence to speak up,” she says. “We should not be afraid to demand respect and equality. We have the right to dream, to be heard, and to be treated fairly.”

This Women’s Month, Lyka’s story reminds us that anyone, no matter their age, can take part in shaping a world where respect and fairness are given to all.
