Youth Call for Safer Digital Spaces During Safer Internet Day 2025

ChildFund Philippines marked Safer Internet Day 2025 by hosting a virtual discussion on February 11, bringing together youth representatives from ChildFund Japan’s Philippine branch, Educo Philippines, ECPAT Philippines, and 5Rights Foundation. The event was part of the global “WEB Safe and Wise” campaign aimed at promoting safer digital environments for children.

During the session, young participants shared insights on online safety and digital rights. They called on adults—particularly parents and educators—to better understand how children use the internet and to engage in open conversations about cyberbullying, harmful content, and privacy.

The youth also addressed policymakers and tech companies, urging stronger online protection policies and more transparent data practices. They raised concerns about the design of digital platforms that prioritize engagement over well-being, often at the expense of children’s privacy.

Digital kindness was another key theme. Children emphasized the need for tools that make it easier to report harmful behavior and expressed their desire to be treated with respect online.

Allan Nuñez, former Advocacy and Child Protection Specialist at ChildFund Philippines, highlighted the importance of centering young people in digital safety efforts, noting that their lived experiences are essential in shaping effective solutions.

According to a 2021 UNICEF report, one in two Filipino children aged 12 to 17 have experienced online sexual abuse or exploitation. While the passage of the Anti-OSAEC Act (RA 11930) marked progress, continued education and support remain critical.

The event is part of ChildFund Alliance’s broader efforts to eliminate violence against children, including threats in digital spaces.
