Climate-Resilient Communities: Capacity Building Workshop for LGUs on Nature-Based Solutions

Last November 4-8, 2024, ChildFund Philippines, in collaboration with the Iloilo City Government, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and other local partners, conducted a capacity-building workshop in Iloilo City to help local government units (LGUs) integrate Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into their governance strategies.

Participants from nine local partners, including Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officers (MENROs) and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers (MDRRMOs), engaged in meaningful discussions and hands-on activities. The event included interactive sessions, case studies, and a visit to the Iloilo Esplanade—a shining example of how NbS can enhance urban resilience while preserving biodiversity.

During the workshop, Iloilo City Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon shared an inspirational message, emphasizing the importance of NbS in promoting sustainable development and safeguarding communities against climate-related risks.

The sessions highlighted how NbS and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) can be integrated into local plans such as Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) frameworks and Local Climate Change Action Plans (LCCAP). This approach not only addresses pressing environmental concerns but also ensures safer, healthier spaces for children and families.

One participant shared their insights, stating, “The Iloilo Esplanade is an inspiring example of how Nature-based Solutions can transform communities. Seeing its impact firsthand, I realized how integrating green and gray infrastructure can protect the environment and create spaces for people.”

Through workshops like this, ChildFund Philippines continues to support communities in addressing environmental challenges, ensuring that children and families can live in safe and sustainable environments. The event also reinforced the power of partnerships in scaling solutions and fostering resilience for future generations.
