On June 15, ChildFund Philippines, in collaboration with SEAMEO INNOTECH and the Department of Education, proudly hosted the soft launch of the very first localized Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Competency Framework. This groundbreaking initiative, specifically tailored for Filipino learners, marks a significant milestone in the country’s educational landscape.
The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Dr. Leonor Magtolis-Briones, Centre Director of SEAMEO INNOTECH, who expressed the importance of cultivating emotional and social skills in education. ASEC Dexter Galban, Assistant Secretary for Operations at the Department of Education, highlighted how this framework aligns with the department’s broader goal of nurturing holistic development for Filipino children. Mr. Anand Vishwakarma, CEO and Country Director of ChildFund Philippines, emphasized the crucial role of this framework in shaping resilient and well-rounded individuals. Dr. Grace Aguiling-Dalisay, a member of the SEL Advisory Group and Chair for ChildFund Philippines, shared her vision of how this framework can transform classrooms and strengthen communities.
The localized SEL framework is essential not only for children but also for educators and caregivers. For learners, it enhances self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills—vital traits for success in both school and life. Teachers benefit by fostering more supportive and inclusive classroom environments, improving relationships and classroom dynamics. For caregivers, the framework offers practical strategies to support children’s emotional well-being, improving communication and strengthening family bonds.
What makes this framework truly unique is its culturally relevant approach. It considers both the specific cultural context of the Philippines and the universal emotional learning needs shared by children globally. This allows for the development of effective strategies that are attuned to the realities of Filipino children and their communities.
The journey of bringing this localized SEL framework to full implementation is just beginning, and we are excited to continue working together with our partners and stakeholders to ensure its success. This initiative holds the promise of unlocking a future filled with emotionally intelligent, well-rounded Filipino children ready to face the challenges of tomorrow.
